What Is a Good Haircut For
Curly Hair? Let's Find Out

"Hey, Kelly? What is a good haircut for curly hair?" Joanna Litzinger asked her neighbor across the fence - the late February winds blowing her hair into her face. "I've got an appointment at the salon and am looking for a style that adds volume and bounce to these shoulder length curls of mine. Know what I mean?"

Joanna, a busy loan officer trainee had waged a life long battle against her sometimes brittle curls. At times she was in control. Other times they were. But she seldom felt at ease with her tresses. Sound familiar?

Kelly shot back, "I'd say never ever go for a blunt cut that's for sure. I did it once and it turned out horrible. My curly ends were sticking out all over. Like a crazed pin cushion. Never again. The best haircut for curly hair I've had was more layered with side bangs."

Good idea. And the layering can be of any length. This works for some because when you have layers you can use curl activating gel and anti frizz products to keep things in line.

"Well, I am looking into shorter cuts for my naturally curly hair," replied Joanna. "But I do not want any cutting shorter than shoulder length as summer is coming on and with that the famed Houston humidity and all."

Another good idea. Here's why. Dryness. What with their twists and turns curls are exposed to the elements from all sides. Humidity swells the cuticle resulting in hair that looks frazzled and frizzy. This is why you want longer hair to weigh things down a bit. Giving any conditioner you apply a shot at keeping your hair softer and frizz free.

Now there are plenty of short hair cuts for curly hair. You can go for curly bob with fringes or bangs. Or you can choose more of a tousled style. Or go for a looser center parted style.

"Just don't let your stylist get snip happy," Kelly advised. "Doing too much layering or doing it wrong can make your hair frizzy too." Ideally you should go for graduated layers. Otherwise your hair can end up looking flat and lifeless.

But that's not all. While short loose curls look really cute, you can style your curly hair in many other ways. Aside from shorter hairstyles, there are good medium hairstyles and long hairstyles for curly hair too.

Short and medium strands can look stunning too. You don't have to brush them. You just have to style with something like KMS Curl Up Bounce back scrunching spray. Such styling products work to keep your curls loose and bouncy.

For longer options you could try the long bouncy curls. You should arrange the curls around your face. The lengthier curls are left loose and around the shoulders. This hairstyle looks quite charming. To control any frizz you could use a styling gel.

If your long hair is not too curly you could try large and wavy curls. The large curls give you a lot of definition. This hairstyle gives your hair a wavy look. As the curls are loose you should use a frizz control product.

"Well" Kelly said after thinking for a bit "Well, you can also get away with wearing it up in a loose ponytail or messy bun if it is hot. I have done that and it is a breeze. But to tame the frizzes and care for mine I use Herbal Essence products and mild shampoo.

Kelly's Personal Styling Secrets For
Those With Haircuts for Curly Hair

Space out shampooing or use conditioner alone some since even the gentlest suds can at times dry your locks.

Your locks will look healthier and less frizzy the less you agitate them Focus any "scrubbing" you think you need to do nearest the scalp where any dirt and oils tend to accumulate anyway. Using just your fingertips mind you. While letting the shampoo run down your hair. Cleaning it in the process.

Whenever you lather up, choose a shampoo containing smoothing ingredients like silicone. Following that up with a curl specific conditioner. And rather than rinse it out completely leave a little behind as a sorta mini leave in treatment

Give you hair time to adjust to less washing. You're training it to require less shampoo and this might take as much as a month.

I avoid using mousse on curly hair ever. Also avoid using a brush completely. And don't touch your hair any more than you have to.

"In a pinch I've used ordinary hand cream to tame out of control my tresses," Kelly admitted. "My hairdresses clued me in. She said to spread just a dab on your palms. Then run them lightly over your head to get needed control. Works great! "
