Thin Hair: Looking Deeper

Rachel Halliwell was surprised to learn that thinning hair in women is a problem for nearly 40% of her peers over the age of 50.

"Heck, nearly 1 in four women start to experience some degree of hair loss by the time they hit 40," she reported.

"If you had told me that, I wouldn't have believed you," the grandmother of three admitted.

Halliwell said the devastation can be hard to deal with. You think of hair loss as a guy thing. But gals suffer too. Coming about in part because of lower estrogen levels and other changes that are normal with aging.

And the hair loss in women is different too. It's generalized but primarily over the top of your head.

To minimize hair loss, first be kind to your hair. Avoid harsh chemical treatments. And try to protect your hair from excessive sun and wind exposure.

Get yourself a gentle shampoo and use a protein conditioner regularly. Sure these aren't exactly what you'd call thinning hair products, but they're still a good idea.

Speaking of which, why not try thickening products? They can give the hair you have a fuller appearance.

As a last resort consider ways to add hair. That might be hair weaves for thinning hair, custom hairpieces (a so called "top-piece") or hair transplants. Yes, women do have hair transplants now a days.

Anyway, thinning hair in women is a bigger problem than many realize. And it's worse than just a bad hair day. But don't suffer in silence as there are things you can do, both cosmetically and as a preventative to preserve or restore the appearance of your hair.
