Picking The Right Hair Color For You

Picking the right hair color for you is surprisingly easy if you know how. All you need do is pay attention to a few details and you too can choose a flattering color every time.

All that is great news since altering hair hues is an easy way to change your appearance, how you feel about yourself as well as how other think of you. Leaving you feeling super hot with your new look and it's not nearly as permanent as a tattoo either.

Yet while different coloring options abound, not every one is right for you. The idea is to find the color that works with, you know compliments, your skin tones. That's what it's all about here. Just because you can change to platinum blonde doesn't mean doing so will enhance your look.

But how to judge as you stand in the aisle in front of boxes and boxes of color dye? Which can make the process of choosing the right tone so confusing.

The key is to determine if your skin undertones are cool or warm.

Cool Defined: If your skin burns easily you likely have cool undertones. Rosy checks is another sign of coolness. Your underlying skin tone would be ruddy, pale, freckled, ebony or what you might call peaches and cream. Another school of thought says if your eyes are blackish brown, deep brown, grayish blue and, dark blue puts you into the cool category too.

What to look for: Look for shades with the terms cool or ash in the name. They work best for those with cool undertones.

Warm Defined: Easily tanned skin with a golden glow is said to be warm. Your skin tones might range from olive colored, to medium, or brown. In this case your eye color would go from golden brown, green, greenish blue, turquoise and hazel with flecks of gold or brown.

What to look for: Colors labeled warm or golden would be best suited for you.

If the product names don't give you any hints you can take that to mean the color is more in the neutral camp. Meaning it's a color application that SHOULD work well with most skin tones.

In any case these are more or less just rules of thumb to help you select. You obviously know what undertones you skin has than I would.

You might further refine the color selection process with these additional tips.

Know What You Want
If you don't know the goal how can you get there? Before you head down the hair coloring aisle it helps to know if you are looking to lighten, darken, cover gray or what? How long you want to color to last is another good question to have the answer to. Are you looking for something more temporary or what?

Follow the Eyebrow Rule
The natural color of your eyebrows gives you your starting color. From there it's unwise to deviate more than a shade or two darker or lighter. I mean think about it. The color of your eyebrows compliments your facial skin tones perfectly. How could it not? But if you get too frisky or daring when it comes to color your face will start to take on a washed out look.

Here's a Tip if Your Ends Are Dry: If your ends are on the dry side you might snip a little off. Or you could always mist them just a bit with water before coloring. Otherwise those parched strands, being most porous, will soak up too much dye and likely come off with a more intense color than the rest of your hair. Which is probably not the affect you were going for.

Follow the Side of the Box Rule
Crazy as it may sound, it helps to remember that the smiling model with gorgeous hair on the box of coloring is not there to clue you in on how the color will look in your hair. Although you might think so. Rather the answer to that question is found on the side of the box. There you'll find a chart that can better help you determine what color you might actually end up with based on the color your hair is now.

Oh and if you've already had a home permanent you might want to think twice here. Your hair can only take so much exposure to chemicals and peroxide and still feel soft and natural. Highlights might be another way to go here? Done at your salon perhaps.

Anyway, armed with these ideas and advice, you can feel free to go ahead color your hair and make other heads turn. Perhaps making your less daring friends wild with envy. Because how else can you so dramatically transform your look in like 30 minutes in the privacy of your bathroom?
