Straight Talk About Long Curly Hair Care

How to Take Care of Curly Hair

Ruth Papenbrock knows she will always have battle heat and humidity. Some sultry summer days in Houston her shoulder length curls seem to have a mind of their own.

"After years of painstaking efforts to TRY to make my hair perfect I have a much more relaxed attitude toward any long curly hair care I do," Papenbrock freely admitted.

"Dealing with curly hairstyles I've been helped a lot by recognizing that by letting my hair grow longer adds weight. Weight means something to my hair. Giving any conditioner I do use a better chance to soften and relax the curls. Know what I mean?"

"Then too my hair tends to be dry," Ruth continued.. "So I shampoo only as needed. Which is good advice for anyone with curls. Less shampooing means less blow drying. Saving your arms for another day."

"Here's another long naturally curly hair care tip. The right conditioner helps keep the moisture out. Curly hair goes nuts in humid weather like around here because the moisture in the air actually expands the hair shaft. Well conditioned hair isn't as receptive to the moisture."

"Blow drying it straight can take forever unless you do like stylists at the beauty salon do," Papenbrock cautioned. "That is apply the blow dryer haphazardly or wait for it to air dry somewhat. The desired flat, smoothing action happens during that final 20% of dry time."

"Oh and the blow drying only happens after cautious towel drying first. See why you only want to shampoo as needed? Using curly hair shampoo specially designed for my type of hair? Or why some of the curly haired among us prefer short curly hair styles, if they have a choice."

"Then when looking to use a blow dryer in straightening naturally curly hair," she went on "remember to concentrate on the layers underneath first. Those tend to be the curliest."

Hey thanks for the straight talk about long curly hair care, Ruth.

If your dandruff doesn’t improve after a few days of using a medicated shampoo from the drug store you may need to see a dermatologist for relief.
