Chop Talk: How To Cut Bangs At Home

Fresh-from-the-salon bangs look, well, so fresh and clean. Don't you agree? But stopping by the salon just to get your bangs trimmed can be such a pain.

So why not bypass the salon routine and snip your bangs yourself? Yes you really can do it without screwing it up. C'mon now. It's not THAT hard.

Sure. Cutting bangs for the first time ever definitely counts as a sweaty palms moment. But I'm confident you can pull if off. You can keep them in shape at home. Just lean in a little closer and I'll reveal the secrets to bang trimming that don't leave you looking like a badly shorn sheep.

That said….it's important remember this. If you get snip happy there is no going back. This is why it's better to trim a little at a time. Snipping carefully rather than going wild with the scissors.

5 Tips On How to Cut Bangs at Home

So here’s how to cut bangs at home and do it right.

1) Cut dry hair
Wash you hair drying it fully. This is a critically important step because if you cut bangs when they are wet, well, you may cut off too much. That’s because wet hair deceptively looks longer.

2) Get the right scissors
The scissors you've got lying around the house are likely too big for the job. Besides the blades are simply too thick. Plus being bigger and all they’re awkward to handle. All of which may result in cutting off too much hair.

Here’s what to do instead. Grab yourself some sharp, little cuticle scissors at your local drug store. Or if you prefer stop by a beauty supply store and pick up some mini shears. But cuticle scissors should do just fine.

3) Don’t pull
Avoid pulling your bangs down too taut. The extra tension will make them seem longer than they are. Yet when you release them they will bounce up shorter than you expected as a result of over trimming. Yes you want them straight. Just don’t yank on them hard to get them that way.

4) Cut the job in half
The idea is to snip the smallest amount possible. Hold your small, sharp scissors vertically, at an angle, while pulling your bangs a bit away from your face.

Then starting at the center, take half the bangs and cut to the left snipping off no more than an eighth of an inch. Taking care not to twist the hair. Repeat again from the center only cutting to the right this time. Remembering to snip off no more than an eighth of an inch.

5) Stop
Evaluate your cut. Pondering carefully if you need to cut off more hair or not. Knowing full well it’s best to quit while you’re ahead. Know what I mean?

Now see? That wasn’t so hard now was it?

And if you’re wondering how to cut bangs and layers, think thinning shears.

Anyway that’s how to cut bangs at home. Just follow these disaster-proof steps, being mindful not to cut off too much at once, and you too can keep pretty much any haircuts with bangs fresh looking and nicely trimmed in the convenience of your own bathroom.
