Hair Coloring Advice - I've
Got a Confession to Make

Mastering Home Hair Color Isn't That Hard

hair coloring advice The purpose of hair color is to give you a new look, more confidence and a better attitude about yourself, right? Yet that floor to ceiling wall of do-it-yourself hair colors can induce a panic attack in the best of us. To help avoid that here is some sane hair coloring advice to help you decide what hair color best suits you.

But first. I've got a confession. I don't always follow my own hair coloring advice! <gasp> With disastrous consequences. Or what you might say is a string of bad hair days that last longer than I care to admit. A high price to pay.

So don't let that be said of you.

For starters do not go for dramatic hair color makeovers. Like going from brunette to lime green. Or blonde with stark raving red highlights. Such an extreme makeover may have it's appeal. And on a whim you might be talked into it. But as you can imagine, you may end up looking clown-like, or worse, just terrible. And you can only call in sick so many days in a row before the boss would be become suspicious, right?

Plus let's not forget. Dramatic hair colors are harder to keep up and maintain. They involve more work. In other words more hair time in the mornings before the dash to work. So let's keep the clowns in the circus.

Next you should always choose the right color and treatment for your hair. One that compliments the color of your eyes and skin tone. Rather than fights it.

For sure you don't want to pick a hair color that makes your face look pale and washed out. Or one that leaves you looking like a survivor of a bad bout of morning sickness.

Tip: Did you know that generally people are classified as warm or cool complexion? The skin which is golden, olive or dark and tans easily is a warm skin color. Cool complexion people are generally fair and have blue or green eyes.

So if you fall under warm then you should choose shades such as golden, bronze etc which is in darker shade than the skin. People who fall under cool skin tone should avoid colors which highlight skin tones like golden, auburn, copper etc.

A blonde color for warm skin people will be harsh or garish looking. As one of the dangers is such hair colors can come off strangely odd against warm skin tones. You are better off opting for warmer shades in this case. Red suits better on people having cool or pink skin tone. While a light brown hair on dark blonde look looks pretty on anyone.

This is why it's not a good idea to choose hair colors just because you happen to like them on a magazine cover, in a photo at the salon, or because your favorite celebrity looks hot with it. Again, do not go for extreme looks. (If you have already done so, do not try to repair it at home. This is not a task for amateurs. Such moves demand you seek professional help.)

Another bit of hair coloring advice? If your hair is less than one-third grey then opt for semi-permanent color that is a shade lighter than your, say, natural brunette hair color. What happens is almost magical. The grey blends right in and seems to all but disappear.

Now if you have more grey hair then choose a permanent ashy color. This way your grey hair will appear blonde.

Either way you will be gray free. Which is the big idea to begin with isn't it?

Hair Coloring Advice and Salon Secrets That Really Work

Here are some more helpful tips and other good advice.
• If you are doing it at home then always do the strand test. This involves coloring few strands of hair to see if it suits you.

• If you are a beginner then it is always best to use semi-permanent colors. Being somewhat temporary anyway, you won't get stuck with a color you hate as semi-permanent colors will wash out after few weeks.

• If you go for permanent color products hope and pray nothing goes wrong. Because you could be in deep trouble. Permanent means just that. The color is not washable. Though such colors may fade overtime it will still not go back your natural hair color. EVER!

• Avoid the sun, water and salt water for 48 hours after coloring.

And use shampoos and conditioners formulated to protect your color.

• Do not color hair that has been exposed to henna or metallic dyes.

Follow advice like this and I'll be willing to bet you'll look stunning in your new color rather than stunned!
