Given how long Kathleen's hair is, guess you could say summer hair styles for long hair are her specialty.

"During the summer you really should make conditioners your new best friends," she warned. "I do more deep conditioning too - at least once a week."

"Also," Petre continued, "sun screening isn't just for your skin. I try to wear a cute hat anytime I'm going to be out in the sun for any length of time. That's because excessive exposure to the sun makes your hair more likely to break off."

Check your hair care products for sunscreen or UV protection and filters. Look for for oxy- or -cinnamate dimethylamine glutamate, or vitamin E on the label.

"Looking to take a dip in the pool? Wet your hair with tap water before jumping in. That way it won't be as likely to absorb the chlorine or other chemicals in the water you're fixing to dive into. Chlorine can make your strands look and feel like straw - which isn't good no matter which of the summer hair cuts you go with."

Also use a swimmers shampoo to help minimize any chlorine build up

"Then too I like to use a clarifying shampoo to thoroughly clean my hair," Kathleen said.

"Honestly," Petre concluded, "cute summer hair styles don't look so cute if you don't take care of your hair."
