Tips on Choosing the Right Hair Color

How To Choose the Right Hair Color - the Trick

Choosing the right hair color was not going to be a big deal. At least that’s what Melissa thought. Boy, was she even mistaken.

She opted to buy a shade of gold that was quite a few shades lighter than her natural brown. She could hardly wait to see the transformation her new haircolor would bring.

Well it did make her look different alright. Sadly though she was totally shocked when she first saw the results in the bathroom mirror.

"I always wanted to go blonde. I was really sure going blonde would make me look sultry too," said Melissa. "My friends advised me to pick a color that was a little on the radiant side? Which I did since I thought my complexion would look much brighter too. So I got a home coloring kit and tried it out. But I honestly looked awful! Luckily it was just temporary coloring and I rinsed it out after shampooing a couple of times. I sure will think twice before coloring my hair next time."

According to colorist Lindsay Harper, Melissa has a sallow skin tone which wasn't suited to be complimented by blonde hair. And she’s not the first to make this mistake.

"It’s a basic rule of thumb of cosmetology," Lindsay explained. "You’ll find that sallow is just going to look even more washed out with hair that’s a lighter shade. In general colouring hair isn’t that tricky. And Melissa should have simply colored her hair using hair dyes a few shades darker than her natural color to get the right effect. That’s one of the primary tricks to picking the right hair color for you."

Actually turns out the checklist for choosing the right hair color is not that long.

"There is just one item on it to be noted," said Lindsay. "Your skin tone. Keep that in mind at all times when you are picking the right hair color for yourself."

Harper added, “Another common complaint after coloring is fading. And for those getting their hair colored or highlighted for the first time it comes as a bit of a surprise.

One thing you want to watch in that regard is time in the sun. “It’s murder on all colors, said Harper. “We recommend if you’re going to spend a day in the sun to take along a scarf or hat to protect your hair. Which is a good idea even if you don’t color your hair.”

Another solution in our salon is plant-based color enhancers.

The first thing I’d suggest is a color enhancing shampoo. It won’t affect the color per se. But will help delay fading. Plus it’s easy to use. Just like you would any other shampoo.

Or you might use a color enhancing conditioner. The ones we use add moisture to the cuticle. About a 7 minute treatment is all it takes.

Finally you can use one of the so called leave in treatments. Think of it like a color booster shot. That will last until you lather up again. It’s easy to apply. Towel dry your hair and off you go.
