The bob was scandalous in the roaring '20s, thoroughly modern in the '60s and came roaring back to life as a style to worn again in the '90s. In between it's been in and out of favor sometimes for years. But the bob will never permanently be in exile as a style of celebs and Hollywood types. Meaning it will be popular on Main street as well. And possibly why you see the words "timeless" and "bob" coupled together to often.

So if you've been paying attention you know that bobs have moved well beyond that waif on the side of boxes of salt. They can stand up to some playfulness and offer a variety of looks. Epitome of Versatility You'll find the classic bob to be defined as a one length cut that ends somewhere above the shoulders. Yet it's a versatile cut. That can be worn curly, straight, banged, stacked or piecey. The ends can be blunt or razored. It works well with soft waves, stick straight, even fine locks. It works for all but the frizz prone or those blessed with tresses that tend towards the bushy side. |
Aside from that flip through most any fashion magazine and you'll see models with inverted and angled, chin length and asymmetrical bob haircuts. A wide variety of styles like these account for it's standing in the current fashion trends.
A Word About Curly Bobs
If your hair tends towards soft loose curls a curly bob can be absolutely adorable. If you hair tends towards tighter curls you can end up with a mushroom head. Ooops. Not a problem easily fixed and for sure not by going shorter. But for the right person with the right hair, a curly bob can be the carefree hairstyle you've been looking for.
Not For Commitment Phobic
Yet this isn't the style if you're looking to pull it back into a pony tail when the whim strikes. That's not going to work. Plus any cut you can do that with is certainly not a bob. Which is to say if you can't be committed to it, don't get the cut. No matter how cute you think you'd look with it.
Another problem with that is if you can't or don't want to get the cut to fall above your shoulders, your so called "bob" may morph into something more of a flip. Again likely not the desired affect.
Fuller Looking
Cut nice, neat and even using scissors a bob can add bulk and heft to fine hair. Or you can have the ends razored which softens the bluntness. Some say cut that way make it look a bit more alluring and sexy. In any case the idea is to find one that works with your hair.
Tip: Headbands and unadorned barrettes offer an easy way to vary your look from day to day while giving your look a bit of a retro feel to it. The width of choice when it comes to headbands is wider by the way in case you were wondering.
Bangs Optional
If you opt for bangs you want to be bold to be beautiful. And by that I mean you often want a severely straight, eyebrow grazing fringe although side swept bangs work too. However stay away from light wispy bangs. They scream look at me I'm oh so behind the times. Yes, they're very much out of date.
Easy Care
If you've got healthy hair that tends to be straighter than not, you're in luck. You can get into the minimal styling only line because a good shampoo and decent conditioner is all you need to keep this style looking silky shiny, and smooth.
